He turned to music for comfort, listening to British radio pioneer John Peel, and became a fan of Marc Bolan and David Bowie.
Afterward, he met David Ball at Leeds Polytechnic and formed Soft Cell in 1977. It was disbanded after releasing a fourth album, The Last Night in Sodom, in 1984 but reunited in 2001 and again in 2018.
